Sad Robot was established by Bruce Smith and Eugene Stander in October 2010.
We started selling singles shortly after the release of Scars of Mirrodin, in order to make more singles available to players at our tournaments. Then, 5 sets and approximately 1 year later, on the brink of the Dark Ascension release, we started selling singles online.
After a lot of success, we decided to partner with DeeTwenty Geeking Venue and Owen joined the team.
Sad Robot was purchased by Phillip Thompson in March 2018. We still have the same vision in mind now, as when Sad Robot first started – to supply singles to players and introduce new players to Magic in a fun and friendly environment. We started by renovating our flatlet and turned this into our first play venue.
In November 2018 Sad Robot expanded their product offerings to include Board Games, HeroClix, Dice Masters, Miniatures, Figurines, RPG – Dungeons & Dragons, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and other trading cards games i.e. Keyforge.
On the 27th of April 2019 Sad Robot moved from 6 Dally Road, Marlands to our new physical store at Shop 9 Ereene Center, corner 4th avenue and 2nd street, Marlands, Germiston.
We could now comfortably seat 40 players from our original 20 players in our old venue.
In November 2019, after 6 months in our store in Marlands we needed to expand again.
We moved from Shop 9 to Shop 11 in the same shopping complex. We now comfortably seat 56 – 60 players.
